Siemens puts further £40m into Goole train manufacturing facility

Siemens has opened its train manufacturing facility in Goole, Yorkshire announcing a further £40 million investment in the Goole Rail Village.
The new investment, which is in addition to £200 million that has already been committed, will mean that the rail village will bring up to 1,000 new jobs to East Riding in Yorkshire in addition to a further 1,700 supply chain jobs in the surrounding area.
All future Siemens trains for the UK will be built in Goole, including 80 per cent of London’s new Piccadilly Line trains. It will also include all of Siemens Mobility’s new battery trains, which the company expects will be ready to export to other markets by 2030.
Siemens had originally expected to fulfil much of the order of 94 sets of nine-carriage metro trains for the Piccadilly Line from its Vienna facility. However, a combination of Vienna being at capacity and Goole not having won any further work, prompted Siemens to decide that after an initial production run in the Austrian capital, 80 per cent of the Piccadilly order would now be fulfilled from Goole.
The new investment will be used to build a state-of-the-art Bogie Assembly and Service Centre. It will expand Siemens Mobility’s current capabilities to overhaul bogies — the framework that the train’s wheels are attached to — from UK trains, including the 3,224-strong fleet it already maintains in the UK.
It will also include new production lines for assembling bogies for new trains, a first for Siemens in the UK. It is due to be operational towards the end of 2026.
Sambit Banerjee, joint chief executive of Siemens Mobility said the opening of the new facility was a “testament to our commitment to the North of England”. Andy Lord, London’s transport commissioner added that Siemens’ investment “reinforces its belief in Yorkshire’s potential as a central hub for train manufacturing.”
Louise Haigh, the secretary of state for transport, and Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, attended the official opening of the village.
Haigh said: “This impressive, world-class facility will be transformational to Goole and its people, providing a boost to the region’s economy and supporting hundreds of skilled jobs.
“Its opening demonstrates the importance of high quality, long-term investment to pave the way for employment and growth.”
